Rug Cleaning That Extends Fiber Life Under Foot Traffic

The gray lane from the door is grit at work
Look at the path from the door to the couch. If it looks gray and flat while the edges still look fine, sand and fine soil are sitting at the base of the pile. Flip a corner and tap the back. Grit falls out, and every step bends the yarn across that grit and cuts it, so by the time the center looks thin, the damage is already done.
Why vacuuming and spot sprays stop short
Vacuuming without a beater bar slows the damage, but it mostly lifts what sits near the top. The sand packed at the base stays put, and spot sprays can push it deeper. Most rugs in daily use need a real wash that rinses soil out of the pile long before they look ruined. Rotate the rug between washes so one path does not take every step.
How we pull the grit out before we wash the rug
First we remove dry soil from the pile, because wet sand turns to mud and stays in. Then we wash the fibers with EPA Safer Choice products and rinse until the water runs clear. Fringe and edges get gentle handling so they do not pull or tangle. The point is clean yarn at the base, not just a brighter surface.
When the foundation shows, washing cannot save it
If you can still feel yarn in the traffic lane, washing is worth it. If you can see the white foundation, cleaning will not bring the pile back.
